Nutrition and Wellness


  • Nutrition, through research, has been shown to have a large impact on wellness.
  • Today, scientists know of over 45 nutrients that are needed in our diet.
  • There is an increased growth in Nutritional Sciences (ie Epidermiology)
Epidermiology - branch of science that studies the incidence of disease in a population      ie. nutrition has been connected with a multitude of different types    of    diseases

Nutrition: Sum of the processes by which a person takes in and uses food substances.
Nutrients: Basic components of food that nourish the body.

Energy Related to Calories


No energy is provided by water, vitamins, or minerals.  The amount of calories can be calculated as follows:

__grams Carbohydrates X 4 = ___ kCal
__grams  Fats               X 9 = ___ kCal
__grams  Protein           X 4 = ___ kCal

Other Foods on the Food Guide

Another factor to consider when choosing what foods to eat and how much of those foods, is when the food does not fit into any of the food groups, that it should be consumed in moderation, as it would be included in the "other" category.
